Poets and Writers from the 20th -21st century


POETS / WRITERS:


Germany counts many poets and writers who are well-known nationally and internationally. Among them are Horst Bienek, Günter Grass, Herman Hesse, Herta Müller, and many others.

Horst Bienek

Horst Bienek (1930 – 1990) was a novelist and writer of the 20th century. His most famous work was the four-volume series of novels telling the prelude of World War II, and the story of the war itself. He received several prizes, including the literary prize, the Nelly Sachs Prize in 1981. 

Günter Grass

Günter Wilhelm Grass, born in October 1927, has several occupations, including novelist, and poet. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999 and he is considered as the most famous living writer in Germany. Grass wrote the Danzig Trilogy, which is a work that made him known internationally. The trilogy includes Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum), Katz und Maus (Cat and Mouse), and Hundejahre (Dog Years), which all deal with the rise of Nazism, and wartime in the city of Danzig. 

Herman Hesse

Herman Hesse (1877 – 1962), was a poet and novelist who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. He is best known for his novels, SteppenwolfSiddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game. In each of those novels, he explores a search for authenticity, spirituality, and self-knowledge through an Individualistic lens.

Herta Müller

Herta Müller, born in  August 1953, is a German-Romanian novelist, and poet. She is an internationally known  writer and she was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2009. Müller has written many works in Prose and many novels. Her novel Atemschaukel (The Hunger Angel), which describes the fate of many Germans in Transylvania after WW II. The story was based on the experience of poet Oskar Pastior and on facts that had happened to her mother.
